The Outlaw Trail: A History of Butch Cassidy and His Wild Bunch
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (August, 1996)
Average review score:

The Real WestThe fascinating true story of the outlaws of the late Old West, (roughly 1887-1909). This book was originally written in the 1930s, based on interviews with witnesses still living. The author skillfully weaves Butch Cassidy throughout the narrative, but the story is not the outlaw leader's alone but of Gunplay Maxwell, Big Nose Jake, Sheriff John T. Pope, Queen Ann Bassett and a host of others, of Hole-in-the-Wall and Robber's Roost, of a time when *everyone* stole cattle, of bank robberies gone awry, local juries that never convict, and posses so fearful of the men they are pursuing that fresh sign on the trail means it's a good time to stop and brew coffee.

Pavilion of Woman
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (October, 1978)
Average review score:

an excellent bookThe book was boring in some places, but you WILL like it! The main character starts off as a normal housewife of Midcentury China: admirable, hardworking, and elegant. But she later improves greatly after spiritual fulfillment by a priest in her city. He changes her to such an extent that the whole family notice it. Many wonderful things happen and a few very sad things happen. Yet I would even venture to say that the advice that this priest gives Madame Wu might even....change you!

Pearl S. Buck, the Story Bible
Published in Hardcover by Grammercy (October, 1997)
Average review score:

The "plain language" BibleFor someone who has tried to read the Bible several times but been unsuccessful at keeping it up due to the conplexity of the language used, this book was golden. In it, Pearl S Buck retells the bible stories in an interesting and informative way. I have read the book through over several days and could not wait until evening when I would have time to get back to the stories. I was also able to retain the stories and their meanings. It would be a great for primer for pre-teen kids and, of course, adults.

The book follows the subsequent ups & downs of a marriage between a poor hard-working girl and a man accustomed to wealth and leisure, how their love impacts those around them & especially each other. Set in the early 1900's and extending past World War II, it also is a novel evocative of our country's roots.

Psychology for Musicians
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1944)
Average review score:

exceptionally simple and conversational.a rewrite of the original version which was destroyed before published, it's astonishingly reader-friendly...for a book on psychology. It includes some light humour which are both entertaining and relaxing on a rather heavy topic; the writer constantly puts in mind his reader being musicians or even his students from his past. A great book overall. Definitely enjoyable.

Shadows on My Heart: The Civil War Diary of Lucy Rebecca Buck of Virginia (Southern Voices from the Past)
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (May, 1997)
Average review score:

Insightful, informative, and importantThis book is a good source for those interested in the life of the average antebellum/civil war girl. Although she lives on a plantation (her father owns about 8 slaves) she does not hold the same social status of other well read diarists (i.e. Mary Chestnut and Sarah Morgan). A careful read of this diary will cause many to change their outlook on 19th century women.
